Asian Refiners to Scale Back Output Amid Softening Margins
[Dow Jones] BMI Research expects Asian refiners to reduce their output of refined products, such as diesel, as demand growth lags behind production growth, resulting in lower margins. "The impact of a drought-induced bump in South Asian diesel demand is fading, while surging exports have plunged the market deeper into surplus," the firm says, pointing out margins in Singapore slipped 14.3% since peaking at the end of June, to settle at $10.80 a barrel on July 21. The slowdown in China's industrialization is the biggest reason for the weakening diesel demand in the region. It expects China's diesel consumption to contract at an average rate of 0.2% per year over the next few years, reversing from the 4% average yearly growth observed between 2006 and 2014.
